The Championship provides fans with a massive range of away days from some of the country’s most famous stadia to some smaller, throwback venues.

There’s a fair amount of travel involved, too. Clubs are located all over the country, leaving fans with some arduous train or bus journeys. Championship fans face the prospect of travelling long distances, from Sunderland and Middlesbrough all the way down to Plymouth and Portsmouth.

Here’s a quick look at the five best Championship away days:

Leeds

One of the clear Championship betting favourites for promotion, Leeds have long been one of English football’s greatest away days. Elland Road often produces a raucous atmosphere, whether Leeds are battling against relegation or fighting for a place in the Premier League.

At 1/25 with Paddy Power, Leeds have by far the shortest Championship promotion odds at the time of writing.

The 2024/25 campaign is likely to see Leeds return to the Premier League, so travelling fans should make the most of this season’s trip to Elland Road.

It’s a reasonable walk from the train station to the ground. The home fans are always well-voiced, with an average attendance of over 36,000.

Leeds is also one of the country’s best cities for a day or night out with a great range of pubs, restaurants and bars for fans to enjoy.

Sunderland

Most fans have a long trek to Sunderland. Despite the away fans being stuck high up at the Stadium of Light, it’s well worth the journey to visit the Championship’s largest stadium.

The food offerings are generally good, with their chilli dog going viral on X (formerly Twitter) a couple of years ago. It’s not been the easiest few years for the home fans, but they remain loyal and vocal.

Bristol City

Bristol City’s Ashton Gate might have one of the highest prices for a cup of tea in the Football League, but it’s still a cracking away day.

There’s capacity for 3,000 away fans, there are plenty of great pubs around the ground, and Bristol is a great city to visit.

A short walk takes fans into the heart of a buzzing city. There’s a range of establishments to choose from, whether looking for a quick bite to eat or a few pints on King Street.

Portsmouth

Boasting the cheapest food and drink prices in the Championship, Portsmouth’s Fratton Park is one of the best away days in the second tier.

A classic, intimate ground with an impressive atmosphere, Pompey are well-supported even when the team isn’t performing well. Sell outs are common at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth’s poor home record also means away fans have a good chance of a happy journey home.

West Bromwich Albion

Away trips in the Football League don’t get much more fan friendly than The Hawthorns. West Bromwich Albion’s home ground has fair prices for food and drink, along with sufficient nearby parking and plenty of close public transport options.

There’s plenty for away-day fans to entertain themselves with in Birmingham city centre. The travel links are great for any team playing in the West Midlands, which is a real bonus for those travelling across the country.

The Championship isn’t only one of the most entertaining leagues in the world, it is also a great division for away fans. There are some cracking away days in the second tier of English football, including old-school settings like Fratton Park and trips to pub-packed cities like Bristol and Leeds.
